Superhero Students Awarded in NSF's Generation Nano Challenge
Aiming to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers, the National Science Foundation and the National Nanotechnology Initiative launched the Generation Nano: Small Science, Superheroes challenge, inviting students to create unique superheroes with nanotechnology-enabled gear. The competition asks middle and high school students to use scientific research to drive or equip an original superhero. Students can envision science that is grounded in current research but not yet possible, allowing them to learn about the potentials and limitations of real-world science and technology.
Participants were asked to draw a comic or create a video and then write the details that explained their hero's story.
Three finalists were flown to the USA Science and Engineering Festival Washington D.C. to attend an award ceremony hosted by Star Trek: The Next Generation actor, Wil Wheaton. The competition was also supported by comic book legend, Stan Lee, best known for creating comic book superheroes such as Spider-Man, the Hulk, the Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Thor and the X-Men.
